Week 15 Posting Brody Carter

I feel like after taking this course I have really improved on my writing. I can look at the papers that I wrote in the past and current, and there is a huge improvement. One thing that has helped me become a better writer is writing drafts. I used to just write either a final draft or if I had to write a rough draft, I would just turn in my rough draft as my final draft. I think I have taken more of an interest in writing this semester is because I am able to write about something I like. The assignments are not boring topics that the instructor has assigned us. One thing I think I am still struggling with is proper grammar. I sometimes do not use the right words. Also I tend to rephrase a lot of words or phrases. I really cannot think of how the class could be run more efficiently. One thing that would possibly help the class is do more group exercises. I would benefit more if we did have more conferences. Even if the instructor just took us out into the hallways, and talked about our writings. The conferences do help because you receive one on one teaching from the instructor.

I feel like the best writing I have done in this class is the Literature Review. I felt like this was my best for many reasons. I think that I worked extremely hard on this paper because it is going to help me the most on the mini ethnography. I can almost use the majority of my literature review in my mini ethnography somehow. Another reason I think the literature review was my best is because it is like a summary of all my previous writings. I am including writing from the Exploring Culture assignment and from the Annotated Bibliography. After completing those two papers, and revising them it is like the Literature Review was a final draft of the two assignments. I was really getting used to the style of writing I was using while informing my audience. I liked the literature review because it was basically putting all the pieces to the puzzle together. I finally started to see some structure towards my mini ethnography. Since I have already wrote my mini ethnography, I can tell you that the literature review has helped a great deal. Since I did really well on my literature review, it made the mini ethnography go easy/

Week 13 Posting Brody Carter

It was a cold Friday night in Arrowson’s Archery. Country music was playing softly through a stereo in the corner of the room. There were 15 people in the store. Shooting lanes 1 through 15 all had an archer in it. There was a shooting league this particular night. I sat on a bar stool with no cushion on it. I was sitting right next to the cash register talking to the co-owner of the business, Rob Garrison. Rob is about six foot tall, and has a goatee. He and his brother own the archery shop. His brother, Michael, shoots in national level archery competitions. Rob does not shoot in competitions. I had never known this until he told me that night. He just sets up the bows for his brother. While we were talking, the archers’ were still shooting their competition. All of the sudden, I hear, “Oh, Shit!” This was uncommon during business hours, because there are “NO PROFANITY” signs everywhere in the shop. As I look to see what was causing the commotion, all of the other archers backed up from one shooter. Blood was everywhere, on the floor, on a support beam, and on the archer’s shirt and pants. The archer’s arrow had snapped when he released the arrow causing about a three inch section of his arrow to become lodged into his forearm. The two ladies in the shop were hysterical, and just about every guy kind of laughed and was surprised to see what had happened. The archer who shot himself eventually went to the hospital to get four stitches.

Week 12 Posting Brody Carter

My understanding of the word rhetoric has to do with language. The definition I would give is the way we present our voice. I think it has to with our appearance, the way we talk, and act. If someone is dressed in a suit and tie, people are usually going to think more highly about the person when they talk. If we sound interested or give emotions to when we talk I think can also make a difference. I hear rhetoric in today’s culture when someone asks if something was a rhetorical question. I believe that it would be used as a positive statement. Some people may believe that deer hunters talk with a southern accent. I would say that this is very false, but people from the south that do hunt fit this stereotype of a deer hunter. I could use rhetoric in my mini-ethnography by having someone give their point of view on a topic of deer hunting. Also I can use rhetoric in my mini-ethnography by my position of being an insider.

Writing Quote Brody Carter

"Writing is like a box of chocolate, you never know what type of writing you are going to get."

This quote is meaning that there are so many different type of writing assignments. They all are very similiar, like all the chocolate is similiar. But there is always a key difference such as a bibliography, fictional story, mini-ethnography, or a report. This symbolizes the differrent types of fillings in a box of chocolate. You could have nuts, carmel, coconut, or strawberry.

Week 11 Posting Brody Carter

I do believe that my writing process has changed since week 1. I know actually do research into my writings and have multiple drafts. I now make at least a rough draft, and have someone proof read it before I turn it in. The assignment that has really given me the most trouble is the literature review. It’s really hard for me to not talk about my opinions. The literature review is supposed to be about the readings, and the context in it. So when I talk about a review over something I may not disagree with, it’s really hard not to give my own opinion. The one I thought that was easy was the annotated bibliography. I found it was easy to find research and summarize it and then explain how I am going to use it in my paper. I am writing to express my feelings. I felt that if I did a topic I am an insider in, it would be easier to say things that I do not usually say. Writing doesn’t play a tremendous role in my life, but it does have an impact. I can express my feelings without say a word from my mouth. Everyone uses writing in their life, so it will play a role later on maybe not research paper wise, but a report may be needed.

Family Research

I would have to say that my grandpa is the closest person in our family to being famous. He has passed away, but at every family get together he is always mentioned and stories are told of him. One cool thing that he told me was he used to be Sheriff for Delaware County. He was actually sheriff when the current Delaware County Jail was first opened. He told me that as a joke he was the first person to be locked into a jail cell. I cannot remember how many years he was sheriff, but he had enough stories that made it sound like he was sheriff for 50 years. Now he was sheriff quite a bit years ago, so things back then were different than now days. Back then, if he arrested a man that had a weapon, he could keep the weapon, unless it was used in a crime. So there he had three gun vaults filled with guns. He could tell me a story with each weapon. Sometimes the stories were exaggerated a bit, but it always left me with thinking that my grandpa was almost Superman. I also remember watching Walker Texas Ranger with my grandpa, and he would always say that Walker was one tough son-of-a-bitch. He would else tell me that everything Walker would do to criminals, he too did that to a criminal.

Week 10 Postin Brody Carter

I am going to start arranging my mini-ethnography by thematic. I think this is the best way because my paper has about three different themes: hunting as conservation method, anti-hunting groups, and interviews with hunters. I plan to begin with talking about my interest in deer hunting, and my view on hunting. I will then talk about hunting as a conservation method. I am going to start this section of my paper by defining some terms that people may not know. This will give the informant knowledge about hunter’s perspective on conservation and some statistics. The next section would be anti-hunting groups. This will have an interview from a non-hunters stand point. After reading this section, the reader will have information from two different stand points. The last section will be interviews with hunters. This will end the piece that may leave the readers thinking. I think this will be the best way because it will keep the important topics together, rather than scrambled all over. The reader will have an easy time in the transfer from topic to topic.

Pg. 306 Questions

1. One visit to my field site, I interviewed the owner, Rob Garrison, of the archery shop. I was sitting across the counter of him in a high bar stool. He was sitting across from me in a bar stool with the cash register in front of him and a little to the left. Country music was playing on the radio, but it was not too loud because the music doesn’t want to disturb the shooters. While he was talking to me every so often he would grab a plastic cup to spit into it. Whenever he talked about a tip or a secret he would always lean over to me, within a foot, and talk real quietly.
2. The meaning of the recorded words are the answers to my mini ethnography. I am getting other people’s opinions on deer hunting. When I talked to Rob he brought up a lot of points that I had never thought of about deer hunting. He also said that when he lived back in West Virginia, the typical deer hunter was what everyone thinks of as a hunter, redneck, beer drinking, tobacco user, poor, and smells.
3. The way my informant talked was that he really loved to talk about deer hunting. When talking about previous hunts he was always talking louder and was very enthusiastic, but he was always serious too. He takes deer hunting serious so when he would maybe tell me a hint or other information he would talk softer and only to me so no one else could hear him. He would pause for a couple of seconds in the story for me to stop and think about what is going to happen. It would sometimes build up a suspense

Week 9 Posting Brody Carter

The hardest thing for me so far has been the interviews. I have interviewed three people so far. I have asked all of them as to what stereotypes they think of when they think of a deer hunter. They all have seemed to start off with redneck, but then go off subject. They end up usually talking about Animal Rights Activist. They don’t like to stay on the topic of stereotypes. The easiest thing has been finding research. First, I thought this was going to be the hardest, but after the library day it has become very easy. I have found a lot of material talking about conservation methods from the hunter’s and animal rights activists stand points. The blog has helped me to stay on task with the project. Every week I have to write in the blog therefore every week I continually have to do further research or interviews over my topic. The blog helps me not just put it off until the last minute. I continue to work on my project every week which will make me better prepared for the final project. It will help me because all of my ideas are organized. This will be very helpful when I am searching for materials in chronological order.

Developing A Research Question

1. Why will my readers care about the issue? My readers will care about the issue because they may be tired of hear about the typical stereotypes on deer hunters. They may possibly be a deer hunter themselves, and want to read facts about the benefits of deer hunting. They may also want to read about some of the stereotypes being busted from research.
2. What will my readers want or need to know about the issue? My readers will maybe want to know that there are people that totally agree with hunting they maybe do not hunt themselves. Readers may want to know what people are doing to trying to stop deer hunting or encourage deer hunting. Also they need to know that starving people are being fed by deer hunters, and that they could also participate in this by donating their deer to a food bank.
3. What do my readers already know about the issue? Almost all deer hunters know about animal rights activist who are trying to put a stop in hunting. My readers know that millions of deer are being killed every year in the sport of hunting.
4. What do I want my readers to learn about the issue? I want my readers to learn about the conservation effect of deer hunting. I want readers to know specific reason as to why deer hunting is the major population control on deer. I also want them to know how they too could help starving people by donating venison (deer meat) to the hungry.
5. If I am trying to persuade my readers of something, how easily will they be persuaded? I think that it would be easily to persuade some people, and then on the other hand almost impossible to persuade people. People are either for hunting or not for hunting. The people that may agree with it, but don’t participate maybe easier to persuade than someone who is strongly against hunting.

Week 8 Posting Brody Carter

The main theme that I am seeing in my mini-ethnography is that hunting is a sport of conservation not killing. It seems like everything I find to support the sport of hunting is how it is a practice of conservation. I have found a lot of articles about deer hunting, and that if no one hunted the wild game population would be out of control. I think that in my member’s community they know they are help with conservation, but I don’t think that is the main purpose people hunt. It may be the main reason, but it seems like everyone knows they are helping with conservation, but they do not say they hunt just for that reason. I have yet to hear anyone from my community to say something about conservation.
My place in my subculture is that I am a member of it, and I have never felt more of a member than I do know. It is definitely different because I have become to know why more people hunt that I have ever known. When I talk to people about hunting before this class I would ask what they had harvested that year or previous years. Now that I am working on this project I have asked a lot of different questions that I would have normally not asked. These questions have made me have more appreciation towards other people’s view of hunting.

Week 7 Blog Brody Carter

I can give back to my subculture by hopefully eliminating some of the stereotypes of deer hunters. I also hope to maybe encourage people to hunt or enhance their knowledge about what deer hunting is all about. I hope that people will read my mini-ethnography and realize the importance of hunting. People need to understand that it is not just about going out into a wood and killing a deer. There are more important truths and values to deer hunting than just the killing aspect of it. I hope I can give back to my community by encouraging the donation of venison (deer meat) to the hungry. If maybe deer hunters knew that they could donate venison to the hungry, then a lot of people would be fed instead of having tons of meat go to waste.
This mini-ethnography has greatly improved my research skills. I have learned how to use a lot of useful tools to be able to complete this assignment. I have also learned interviewing skills, and become more sociable around people that I have never talked to before. I also hope I have improved the classes’ knowledge about the sport of deer hunting, and maybe changed the minds of people who think hunting is wrong.

Week 6 Posting Brody Carter

Schuh, Dwight. “To Hunt or Not to Hunt.” Bowhunter. 18 February 2009.
http://www.bowhunter.com/editorial/tohunt/#cont

This article is about how the media can persuade people’s opinions about deer hunting. Some of the media only provides one view of hunting, and the more common view is from the non hunter. This article also explains the ignorance that people have about deer hunting. The writers and readers who agree may not have any personal experience, and form bias about deer hunting whether they know what it really means to hunt deer.

I am going to use this in my mini-ethnography when I am talking about the non hunters view on hunting. This provides great proof that people who really do not know anything about hunting form bias from what they see or hear from the media, friends, or other sources. I believe that this will be helpful because it gives specific instances when the media has only given one person’s view of hunting and how bad it is.

Elliot, Matthew. “Deer Hunting More Than Killing; Residents See Many Benefits.”
The Northwest Missourian. 28 September 2006. 18 February 2009
http://media.www.nwmissourinews.com/media/storage/paper1032/news/2006/09/28/CommunityNews/Deer-Hunting.More.Than.Killing.Residents.See.Many.Benefits-2312233.shtml

This article is about how deer hunting is not just a sport, but a way of conservation. Hunting is the best way to manage a population of animals. If there were not any deer hunters, the deer could become disease and become extinct and possibly cause disease in other habitat. It is a cheap and great way to control populations. The government could spend thousands to try to control a population or they can allow hunting and control the population and the money of tags and ammunition for conservation practices. Deer hunting is a win-win situation.

I am going to use this in my mini-ethnography when I talk about the benefits of hunting. I am going to state that hunting is the best way of conservation of deer populations. Also that money from licenses, ammunition, and other hunting supplies can go towards for better conservation and providing habitat. Although harvesting a huge buck or any deer can be rewarding, but being out the in the peaceful woods where there are no worries is the real reward.

Box #18 Brody Carter

At an archery shop, you may think that the focal point may be found on the shooting range. After all that is why majority of the customers come in, to shoot their bows. The two times that I have been to my field site since given this assignment, I have found that this is not the focal point of the archery shop. In fact the focal point I have noticed is the main counter. As you walk in through the door you are on the side of the main counter. With glass tops on the counter you can see new products or various expensive products. After about fifteen feet of counter, the counter top makes a 90 degree angle left to form the front of the counter. Behind this counter is where the employees sit or work. If they are working on something behind the counter, they can easily still talk to people to show them how to do things or just to socialize. Above the counter is about 25 bows for sale. I think these bows attract the customers to the counter where the employees can talk and discuss the bows or any other hunting related topic. People are always drawn to the shiny, new, expensive bows. Also there are 9 chairs that line the counter where people can sit down. These seats are always occupied. The owners usually sit on the opposite side talking to the customers about the new bows, stories of bows, or stories of hunting. Since these are the only seats in the shop people tend to congregate around the counter.

In-Class Writing Feb. 12 Brody Carter

This past summer I went to Myrtle Beach. This was the second time I had ever been there. When we first arrived at our three tower hotel it was about midnight. The first smell that came to me was the salt from the sea. I think the smell penetrated everyone in the car because as soon as this brilliant relaxing smell came to us we all were wide awake after driving 13 hours. We get into the main lobby with marble floors, marble counter-tops, and a water fountain in the middle of the floor. I can hear a loud sound system playing by the pool deck, so me and my sister go and check it out. To our surprise they had a large dance floor, and a DJ playing music. With palm trees all along the fence, tiki torches lit, and Caribbean music playing it seemed like we were in paradise. When we woke up the next morning I went to the balcony to view the ocean. I opened up the door and heard waves crashing, kids laughing, and Caribbean music playing. Every time it seemed a wave crashed the scent of salt water rushed to me. The white beautiful sand looked like it never came to an end. There were two swimming pools and a lazy river in the shape of an eight. From our floor the tubes for the lazy river looked like blue donuts. I can feel the sun's rays penetrating my skin already, and the humidity sticking to me.

Feb. 12 Post Brody Carte

I think in order to finish my mini-ethnography I need to do a little more time in my field site. I have only been there once since this assignment was given. During my visit I interviewed one person. I was there more for observation. I need to interview some more people so I can get a wide variety of people who belong to my sub cultural. I also would like to do some more observing. I observed a lot my first time there, and got a lot of great information and details. I do believe that I should observe some more so that I can get a better feel for the place and see how people react on a regular basis. As far as research goes I have found little research over my topic. I really hope that I can find some more research. I have not been to the Bracken Library yet, so I am hoping that they will have some sort of information. Most of my research has been on the internet, and the stuff that I have found has helped a lot. I do believe that I am on a good track, and am feeling confident with what I have and my plan for the rest of my final project.

Box #15 Revised

My grandpa's larger, heavy duty Dodge Ram is a place that still reminds of certain sensory details. The navy blue, metallic truck was what he picked me up in everyday from school when I was little. As soon as I got in, a rich, potent smell quickly came to my nose. This smell was from his expensive cologne that he wears. Also mixed in with this potent smell is a hint of minty, winterfresh Life Saver breath ment. The twos combination creates a brilliant essence, that I can still imagine today of the smell. My grandpa also always had a cassette tape playing in the background. The rude but hilarious humor of Roy D. Mercer was the always chosen cassette tape my grandpa had in the player. With the cursing, rude comments, and smoker sounding breath, my grandpa always found every skit hilarious as so did I.

Box #15 Brody Carter

When I think of a place that brings a lot of sensory detail to memory I think of my grandpa’s truck. He used to pick me up every day from school and I would go back to his house until my mom got off of work. He drove a navy blue Dodge Ram. His truck was an extended cab. I would always like to ride in the back seat in the seat that folds down like an airplane seat. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of his truck is the smell that was in it. He used to always wear a lot of cologne. I do not remember the exact brand of cologne that he wore, but if I smelt it to this day I would remember the exact smell of it. Also in the mixture of cologne was he always used to chew on Life Saver mints. The flavor he would always chew on was winterfresh. I cannot say that the mixture of cologne and mints was pleasant, but it is a distinctive scent that I will remember for the rest of my life.
My grandpa also would have the heat turn all the way up. He could be sweating, and never turned down the heat. Another detail that I will always remember is the sound of the radio. He rarely ever listened to the actual radio, but he did listen to cassette tapes. The only tape that I can ever remember listening to was Roy D. Mercer. I don’t know if people know who he is, but he was a comedian would do prank phone calls. One of the key lines that he would always say is, “well how big of a boy are you?” My grandpa would then burst into laughter at the pranks this man would play on people. It didn’t matter how many times he had heard it, my grandpa would laugh until he almost would cry.

Dogtown: Z Boys

1. I believe that the film is an ethnographic study and a work of entertainment. By filming the interviews and the past skateboarding, viewers are completely outsiders. Even people who were not locals were outsiders. It was a totally different style of skating. It was also entertainment. The music and some of the interviews that were not informal really locked in me as a viewer.
2. The interview subjects were the actual Z Boys. Also Zephyr Team and some of the photographers. They are important because they tell you exactly how it was, and they didn’t care if it was the wrong way of saying it. They do go along with the story. When they talked about surfing is was more of the hardcore surfers then to skateboarding it was the original skaters.
3. Some of the attitudes are they don’t care what people think. They are rebels and that they will skate anywhere they want. Also they are punks; if an outsider came in they would throw stuff at them.
4. The structure of the movie was a documentary. It started from the original days, and moved in chronographic order. It really does help understand the subculture because you can see how it has evolved.
5. I viewed skateboarders as punks and rebels. I believe that if I was back in those days yes my stereotypes would hold true, but I really don’t think as much now.
6. I do trust the filmmaker because he had interviews with some of the actual skateboarders. I really enjoyed the movie and thought that it was really interesting and would like to watch the rest. The piece was constructed as a documentary.

Week 4 Brody Carter

I have come to the conclusion that no matter where I go and talk to deer hunters, that they share same passion that I have in deer hunting. I recently went to Michigan to snowboard, and I was sitting in the lodge there was an older man that had a camouflage hat on. As a coincidence I too had on a camouflage hat on. Sure enough he sat down right beside me, and we talked about deer hunting as if we have known each other for years. As I have talked to him I learned that he was from that area of Michigan I was in, and he went on to tell me about this year of deer hunting. I think if you went anywhere that you can hunt whitetail deer that you can find a diehard hunter. It doesn’t matter if they hunt in Texas or in Indiana there is something to the sport that attracts people, and its addicting. All diehard deer hunters share the same passion of going out, and trying to harvest an animal that they may have been trying to harvest for years or maybe for the first time. I don’t think geography has anything to with it, but I do believe that maybe in city limits you will not find as many hunters as you would in the suburbs or country.

I have noticed that I have a lot of privelages, and I could probably go on and on about privelages. A lot of these privelages will play a part in my research of my subculture. First off being a white male. People usually do not think of African Americans as hunters, and when they usually hear of them talking about guns they may first think of them shooting someone. Also i have the privelage to have a vehicle. This maybe one of the most important privelage. How am I going to go to a culture site without a vehicle. I am also allowed to go into this culture site and ask to interview people without having to worry about breaking a law doing so. Some countries you would maybe not be able to go into a place and ask for an interview. I am also privelaged to be able to attend Ball State University. I would not be exploring a subculture and learning about how stereotypes come into play if I was not attending this college. Living in Muncie, I feel pretty safe. I have lived here my whole life so I am not worried about a crime being commited on me. If I maybe asked the wrong person for an interview or if I offended someone I don't really have to worry about someone coming after me.

Post Week 3 Brody Carter

The only research that I have really done this far is the research that I have already known. I have just written down information about my subculture that I already knew. Since I am I am a part of this subculture I do know a little bit about it. I have not done any actual interviews yet, but I have made a list of people that I would like to interview. I do plan to interview a couple of people that I do not know. The one question I am going to ask everyone that I interview is, what is your personal opinion of a deer hunter? Also for the people that do deer hunt, I am going to ask when they started, and why they did start to hunt? I have visited the cultural site. My cultural site is Carroll’s Archery in Muncie. I have been there multiple times. My observations so far are that you really do not see anyone in camouflage. Everyone seems to be in a good mood and enjoying everyone. It is loud in the shop. People are always shooting bows down the archery lane. The people are friendly and when someone comes into the shop they are greeted by multiple people. I have not done any academic research at this point.

Brody Carter Week 2 Posting

The subculture that I am going to study is deer hunters. One possible and probably the best field site I am going to visit is a local archery shop. The archery shop is called Carrols Archery. I have been to this place multiple times. Any given day you can go into this shop and find archers ranging in the age of elementary kids to retired men and women. The main topic of discussion is usually new archery gear or previous archery competitions. During the deer hunting season, the main topic is the stories that happened while deer hunting or the deer that went down. Another field site I would like to visit is a shopping center such as the Muncie Mall or other non hunting shops. I would like to ask questions to people who do not hunt or are related to anyone that hunts. I would like to ask what their view on hunting and what do they think of went they think of a hunter.
Since I already belong to this subculture, I would like to learn why everyone hunts. Whether it is for the meat, family time, relaxation, or to shoot a big buck. I would also want to know how they feel when someone who does not agree with hunting approaches them, and how it makes them feel.

Brody Carter Box #11

The reason I chose the subculture, deer hunters, is because it is a subculture I belong to. Belonging to this subculture has also motivated me to show people who may not accept deer hunting, other people’s views and reasons for partaking in this sport. I believe some of the fixed positions that will affect what I see are age and gender. Some subjective positions I may carry are that I have hunted all my life and was raised to become a hunter. That hunting is a way of life in my family and has been since I was born. Also that it is time spent with my dad, and some of the experience we have shared in the woods.

Brody Carter Box #2

During the fall and winter months of every year I spend almost everyday outside sitting in a treestand. I spend nearly a hundred dollars a year on licenses, ammunition, and the latest gear for that year. During the weekends when most college students are partying, I am waking up somewhere around 5:00 A.M. I get dressed and look at the weather forecast for the day. I usually leave my house around 5:30. I usually sit in rain or snow until about 11:00 A.M. Many people think this insane to be sitting in sometimes single digit temperatures, and maybe not even see a deer. After the morning hunt I go right back out into the woods, and sit until I cannot see my hand in front of my face. Many people think that hunting is a cruel and inhumane sport, but this is what I do almost everyday during hunting season. So while other college students are staying up late or waking up with hangovers, I am waking up before sunrise to head out into the woods, to maybe or maybe not see a deer.

Writing has never been one of my strengths in school. Last semester I took English 103. I was required to write a lot of papers in this class. One paper that really sticks out in my mind was about gun control. This paper was a research paper, and also I had to give an informative speech over the topic. This was probably the best paper I have ever written in my life. The reason I think it was a successful paper was because I enjoyed the topic I was writing about.
The process I used in writing this paper was the loop writing process. I first brainstormed over my topic. I wrote down things I already knew, and then researched through books and the internet. I then created an outline. After my outline was completed I wrote two drafts, and then I wrote my final draft. While writing this paper and all of my other papers I do listen to music. The music I find that helps me concentrate the most is O.A.R. I usually do write my papers the night before, but I could not write this paper the night before since I had to write multiple drafts. I had two fellow classmates edit my paper. I then revised it and turned it in to my professor.
